Toddler Time - New Program for 2014

Toddler Time is a new storytime program for 2014. It fills the gap between our Rhymetime program, for babies, and our  normal storytimes, which cater for 3 years and up.

Age Range: 18 months to 3 years old
Duration: 30 minute sessions (approximately)
Bookings: Just turn up with your toddler
Where: Engadine - Wednesdays at 11am 9548-6003
Cronulla - Thursdays at 11am 9523-4980
Sutherland - Fridays at 11am 9710-0178
Starts: Wednesday 29th January 2014

Why not bring a toddler or two to one of our Toddler Time programs? Sing songs, learn the finger and hand actions to match these classic rhymes and listen to easy flow stories. Help your child to listen, learn and interact in the best way possible - through rhythm, rhyme and song. We hope to see you soon.

Note: Our weekly storytime sessions, including rhymetime, toddler time and storytime, are not held during school holidays.

Engadine Library gets a visit from an Easter Bunny

Engadine Library had a special furry visitor during Easter Storytime - Nibbles, the rabbit.

The children enjoyed hearing Easter stories, singing songs and meeting Nibbles before making an Easter basket craft. A good afternoon was had by all!

Christmas Storytime at Cronulla Mall

Bells were ringing and we were singing at Cronulla Library's Xmas Beach storytime on Friday 16th December. Our special storytime in the Mall attracted 60 people who were happy to enjoy Christmas and seaside themed stories and songs.

'Maudie and Bear' from Bookweek 2011, and our enthusiastic singing attracted the attention of Santa who came to say hello.

Bookatoo also visited much to the delight of the crowd most of whom were our regular Storytime and Rhymetime customers. So a very Merry Christmas to you all and we hope to see you at Cronulla library in the new year.

National Simultaneous Storytime @ Engadine Library

Much fun with feathers was had by Engadine Occasional Care when they visited Engadine Library for National Simultaneous Storytime.
At 11.00 am on 25th May, "Feathers for Phoebe" by Rob Clement was read out aloud to children across Australia to celebrate National Simultaneous Storytime for 2011.
Engadine’s Session was part of our Library Week Celebrations.

Check the library website to see the regular Storytime session times.

Hope to see you there.

Easter Storytime @ Engadine Library

Engadine Library had a special visitor for their Easter Storytime last Friday morning. 40 delighted children were able to give Nibbles the Easter Bunny a friendly pat before they headed off to make their own Easter baskets.

Don't forget that Storytime resumes at Engadine Library on Friday 29th April 2011.

Grandparents' Storytime @ Engadine Library

As part of Seniors Week Celebrations Engadine Library hosted a special Grandparents' Storytime. There was lots of audience participation when old favourites like :"B-I-N-G-O" and "My Gran came back" were enthusiastically sung. Grandparents were then treated to a delicious morning tea while the children were happily working on their "Grandpa and Thomas" craft.

Summertime Storytime at Cronulla Mall

Just before Christmas, the friendly staff from Cronulla Library made an appearance in the mall with a very special Summertime Storytime.

As the children gathered around the stage anticipating the fun they would have at Summertime Storytime; so did the STORM CLOUDS! But they had their own Christmas miracle - when we started to sing Jingle Bells, the rain stopped and the sun came out! Santa may have helped us out there as I am sure he was enjoying our singing from his throne that was located just behind us. The kids listened to a mix of beach and Christmas stories and particularly enjoyed the encore re-enactment of the book week award winning “Bear and Chook”. Bookatoo also made an appearance to wish all the boys and girls a Merry Christmas; with many hugs and hi fives in return. Debbie and Cheryl looked quite fetching in their Hawaiian inspired outfits and a good time was had by all.

Regular preschool and after school Storytimes are held at Sutherland Shire Libraries throughout school terms. At these hour long sessions we read stories, sing rhymes, watch a DVD and make a simple craft. To find out the Storytime Day at your closest Library see our Storytime page.

Christmas Storytime at Engadine Library

Sleepover In the Library

Some very special guests slept over at Sutherland Library this week. We had the pleasure of having 22 children and their toys join us at Monday night storytime.
The toys were very well behaved while we sang the songs, read the stories and shared a movie. And there were no unfortunate incidents involving glue during the making of the craft.
But look what happened after the lights went out..........

Sleepless in the Library

Have you ever wondered what happens in the library when the lights go out? Bring along your favourite stuffed toy to our Sleepless in the Library storytime and you may well find out.

Your toys will have fun joining in with the stories, songs, film and craft. Then say goodnight to them for the night.
What mischief will your toys get up to? Find out at the following Monday night storytime when the photos will be displayed exposing the toys' adventures

National Simultaneous Storytime 2010

Smudge the dog got to meet lots of boys and girls at Sutherland Library's storytime on Wednesday 26th May 2010 when Bruce Whatley and Rosie Smith's story 'Little White Dogs Can't Jump was read as part of National Simultaneous Storytime.
National Simultaneous Storytime is a campaign organised by the Australian Library and Information Association. During this storytime, a picture book written and illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator is read simultaneously to children in a variety of venues around Australia.
The campaign promotes the value of books and encourages young people to read, share books and become involved in other fun and engaging literary based activities. The campaign is an integral part of promoting the value of reading and literacy within Australian society.
In 2009, over 120,000 children and adults across Australia took part in National Simultaneous Storytime.
Smudge behaved himself most of the time, but the best part of his day was he got to have a ride in mum's brand new red sports car. Some of the big kids also had a turn at driving!
Sutherland Shire Libraries hold a variety of storytimes and other activities for children at all your libraries.

Christmas time is near!

Kids come and help us celebrate the festive season. Santa will be visiting various libraries around the Shire, check out where he will be.
