Christmas Storytime at Cronulla Mall
Martin Boyce
Bells were ringing and we were singing at Cronulla Library's Xmas Beach storytime on Friday 16th December. Our special storytime in the Mall attracted 60 people who were happy to enjoy Christmas and seaside themed stories and songs.
'Maudie and Bear' from Bookweek 2011, and our enthusiastic singing attracted the attention of Santa who came to say hello.
Bookatoo also visited much to the delight of the crowd most of whom were our regular Storytime and Rhymetime customers. So a very Merry Christmas to you all and we hope to see you at Cronulla library in the new year.

National Simultaneous Storytime 2010
Sutherland Shire Libraries
Smudge the dog got to meet lots of boys and girls at Sutherland Library's storytime on Wednesday 26th May 2010 when Bruce Whatley and Rosie Smith's story 'Little White Dogs Can't Jump was read as part of National Simultaneous Storytime.
National Simultaneous Storytime is a campaign organised by the Australian Library and Information Association. During this storytime, a picture book written and illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator is read simultaneously to children in a variety of venues around Australia.
The campaign promotes the value of books and encourages young people to read, share books and become involved in other fun and engaging literary based activities. The campaign is an integral part of promoting the value of reading and literacy within Australian society.
In 2009, over 120,000 children and adults across Australia took part in National Simultaneous Storytime.
Smudge behaved himself most of the time, but the best part of his day was he got to have a ride in mum's brand new red sports car. Some of the big kids also had a turn at driving!
Sutherland Shire Libraries hold a variety of storytimes and other activities for children at all your libraries.

Babies Love Massage
invisible woman
There was much cooing, squealing and smiles from the 10 lucky babies who were recently treated to an infant massage session at Engadine Library. The introductory class was the latest instalment of Engadine Library's monthly Parenting Support and Information Sessions. The session was facilitatied by local resident and practicing nutritionist, doula and massage therapist Briony Howland. Briony runs her own classes in infant massage but kindly volunteered her own time to introduce local mums to the basic techniques.
Briony began the session by explaining the benefits of infant massage to both parent and child. Those benefits include strengthening bonds and communication, easing wind and colic, developing baby's sensory awareness and helping baby to achieve a restful sleep. Briony explained correct positioning and the ways to adapt these depending on the age and reaction of the baby, before demonstrating the various massage techniques appropriate for infants.
It was a very interesting, informative and fun hands-on session which was thoroughly enjoyed by all in attendance, particularly the babies! Many of the mums expressed an interest in learning more about infant massage and attending further classes with Briony.
The next parenting information session will be 'Is Your Child Gifted?' This session will be facilitated by educator Kylie Walker. It will be held on Tuesday 20th April at 10.30am.
