March is Women's History Month and we want to help you connect with the women in your ancestry. Use all the tools at your fingertips to advance your Family History research.
Who do you think you are? has made Ancestry.com widely known as a family history research tool. But regardless of what the advertising suggests, it does not have it all.
The library provides you access to various Family History databases, including Ancestry.com, which could broaden your depth of knowledge about members on your tree or even stimulate new branch growth!
FindMyPast has a great range of material covering most countries of the world, however with a particular focus on the records of the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand. Records of women can be found among any of the resources indexed.
Women can be particularly hard to trace so resources which point directly to women can be a boon. Calais Laceworker Immigrants to South Australia and South Australian Destitute Women are a couple of the indexes available via FindMyPast.
The Biographical Database of Australia is designed to help researchers find one person in thousands, to avoid confusing persons of the same name and to track individuals across time. It aims to gather data from a wide variety of original manuscripts and bring them all together under the individuals name. It's a great starting point, for sifting out those with the same name who are not your ancestor. Don't forget to try both of your female ancestors surnames if you know them.
British Newspaper Archive has over 18.5 million digitised newspaper pages from 743 UK papers. Browse by place of publication, title and/or date range. Search by name. Newspaper articles can provide amazing detail about peoples lives. They were the social media of the times. If anything happened it was recorded in the papers. Shipping records, arrests, trials, weddings, parties and advertisements can provide clues to locating people. Just have a browse and get a feel for the big news items of the times which can provide clues as to why an ancestor chose to leave all they knew and travel to Australia.
Sydney Morning Herald Archives has digitised reproductions of every edition between the years 1955 and 1995. Use this to find personal notices detailing births, deaths and marriages not yet released by the NSW Registry of Birth, Deaths and Marriages. Birth records are not released to the public until 100 years have passed, marriages must wait 50 years and deaths 30 years. This is not done just to annoy family historians, but for good privacy reasons. So personal notices are a boon!
Ancestry Library Edition boasts over 1.5 million names in over 4000 databases and at that it is the biggest single source of genealogical information. New South Wales, Australia, Wives and children of Irish Convicts, 1825 -1840, Principal women of the Empire: Australia and New Zealand are two resources dealing specifically with women, however females are documented in all other resources as well.

It looks at social media sites. Each one has different security controls and they can be confusing. Even if you think you are sharing information privately, that may not be the case, so to protect your privacy, safety and reputation, our most private information address phone number and date of birth should never be shared. Find out what else you should know.
There is a session on purchasing online and what to keep in mind, to make sure you are being as secure with your credit card details as you can possibly be. Don't end up paying for something that never arrives, learn how to pick a reputable selling site.
What exactly constitutes Cyberbullying? and what is the best way to mange it if it is happening to your child? Personal attacks are not welcome especially when they can come at any time of the day or night. Being aware of how to deal with them effectively may shorten their lifespan and so lessen the impact.

Putting the pieces together
The Local Studies Collection at Sutherland Library has an amazing array of materials which contain puzzle pieces to uncover of the stories of our community. It is accessible during all opening hours.
Outside opening hours there is still plenty to see and investigate online via the Local Studies page, of the Sutherland Shire Libraries website.
Interviews with people like Georgette Wall provide an oral history of places and happenings in the district. These oral histories are a great way to gain insight into the societal fabric of earlier times. Interview logs are provided for those who prefer to read than listen. These transcripts are also great for searching for that elusive mention of someone or something.
Cliffhaven was one of Yowie Bay's first stately homes and Georgette was fortunate enough to live on the estate for a period in the 1930's with her father, Harry Cobbold, who helped create, and cared for this spectacular garden framing the view from the front steps of the house.
The Historical Photographs collection has more photographs of this delightful getaway, owned by the Catts, Americans, who used Cliffhaven as their Christmas holiday retreat for 6 weeks each year.
The Catts had Cliffhaven built, by the local stonemasonry firm Ellis & Sons, based at Sutherland. Roy Ellis and brother -in -law Reg Moon did most of the work. Advertisements for these men can be located in the newspapers of the time, via a keyword search of the Sutherland Shire Historical Newspaper index. The newspapers can then be viewed, on film, in the library.
Cliffhaven was a large estate with a caretaker cottage, where Georgette and her father resided. It also had extensive grounds, which at the time extended down to the waters of Yowie Bay at it's juncture with Gymea Bay. This aerial view of the estate taken in 1960, shows its size in comparison with the modern housing blocks of today.
Aerial photography of the Sutherland Shire has been conducted irregularly over the past 75 years and can be viewed on Shire Maps. Look up what your own part of the Shire looked like in 1930.
A search of the library catalogue reveals there is a book written by Merle Kavanagh, Echoes from the Bay: the Yowie Bay story. This title includes the stories of many of the old sandstone homes around the bay as well as a wealth of other information on Yowie Bay's past glories.
Georgette Wall also has written a biography, which is part of the Local Studies collection.
Visit the collection on the second floor of Sutherland Library and look around for a full view of the material available, during opening hours.
