Refugee Week - Film Screening
Sutherland Shire Libraries
Between the devil and the deep blue sea – Wednesday 19th June, 7pm at Sutherland Library.
Refugee:
It happened to me edited by Helen Elliot
To celebrate Refugee Week (16th June – 22nd June) Sutherland
Library will screen the film,
“Between the devil and the deep blue sea” at 7pm
on Wednesday 19th June. Book
now.
This 53 minute film, through candid interviews, hidden
camera footage and in the words of asylum seekers themselves, tells the story
of the ‘refugee’. What pushes people to leave home? What do they leave behind?
What do they fear? Why did they choose this path? And what does it take to turn
someone into a ‘boat person'?
Restoring Hope is the theme for Refugee Week this year. Hope ‘for a better life’ is a major driver
for people who embark on such dangerous journeys. To provide some aid to those working
toward that aim, gold coin donations will be requested on the night and the
proceeds donated to Amnesty International. There will be a representative from the Sutherland Shire Friends of Amnesty introducing the film and taking a few questions afterwards.
World Refugee Day is the following day, Thursday 20th
June, and there are many events
and activities across NSW on that day and throughout the week to focus
attention on the difficult circumstances faced by people across the world who
have found themselves without a place to live.
Here is a short taste of the offerings the library has which
highlight this issue.

Film Celebrities Spotted at Engadine Library
Engadine Library
A surprise guest appearance yesterday by two popular movie buffs at Engadine Library delighted the Film Discussion Group.
This friendly group meet on the third Tuesday of each month at Engadine Library to view and then discuss the merits (or otherwise) of a particular movie. The title of the film is kept "under wraps" until the day it is presented, which adds to the suspense.
Yesterday, 20th December, marked the 65th Anniversary of the release of the perennial Christmas favourite "It's a Wonderful Life", (the movie selected for Tuesday's screening and discussion).
Movies presented during 2011 have ranged across various genres and styles have included "Lars and the Real Girl", "The Lemon Tree", "Pleasantville" and "Twelve Angry Men".
The sessions have been so popular that from January 2012, there will be a choice of two dates offered for the SAME film - from 9.30am sharp till midday (17th and 24th January).
Bookings are required and can be made by contacting Engadine Library on 9548 6003. New participants are very welcome. Book now to secure your seat!
