Refugee Week - Film Screening
Sutherland Shire Libraries
Between the devil and the deep blue sea – Wednesday 19th June, 7pm at Sutherland Library.
Refugee:
It happened to me edited by Helen Elliot
To celebrate Refugee Week (16th June – 22nd June) Sutherland
Library will screen the film,
“Between the devil and the deep blue sea” at 7pm
on Wednesday 19th June. Book
now.
This 53 minute film, through candid interviews, hidden
camera footage and in the words of asylum seekers themselves, tells the story
of the ‘refugee’. What pushes people to leave home? What do they leave behind?
What do they fear? Why did they choose this path? And what does it take to turn
someone into a ‘boat person'?
Restoring Hope is the theme for Refugee Week this year. Hope ‘for a better life’ is a major driver
for people who embark on such dangerous journeys. To provide some aid to those working
toward that aim, gold coin donations will be requested on the night and the
proceeds donated to Amnesty International. There will be a representative from the Sutherland Shire Friends of Amnesty introducing the film and taking a few questions afterwards.
World Refugee Day is the following day, Thursday 20th
June, and there are many events
and activities across NSW on that day and throughout the week to focus
attention on the difficult circumstances faced by people across the world who
have found themselves without a place to live.
Here is a short taste of the offerings the library has which
highlight this issue.

Shire Stories - a Refugee Week video
Sutherland Shire Libraries
To celebrate Refugee Week, Shire Wide Youth Services, in partnership with Curious Works and funded by the Sutherland Shire Council Community Services Grant put together this short film about a young Refugee's experiences on his first day in an Australian school. The script was written by Menai High School's ESL class and provided a group of young people with refugee backgrounds, a great opportunity to share their stories and learn about film-making in the process.
